Holey Moley!

the size of a tennis ball

We just got hit by a massive hailstorm. I was taking a lazy Sunday afternoon nap to recover from a big weekend but was awakened by the sound of loud thunder claps and the ear-splitting racket of what sounded like bombs exploding. The storm lasted for about 15 minutes and started off with pea-sized and golf ball-sized hailstones, although about 5 minutes into the storm it took a turn for the worse when the storm started dropping hailstones the size of tennis balls.

A collection of hailstones

Our yard was littered with enormous hailstones but didn't completely cover the yard, although they packed enough of a punch to put holes in roofs and dent cars. No sooner than when the storm hit that the sun emerged from its grey shroud and melted all the hail, leaving tennis ball-sized craters as evidence.

Evidence melts away

We were lucky enough to escape with only a few cracked tiles on our roof although some people weren't as fortunate. Good luck to all those cleaning up after the storm.

Wow, those are really big.
I have seen them several times in my life, back home... but only once they were so big, most of the time they were size of cherry... or even smaller.

Thank goodness your cars were undercover! That's pretty scary and I'm glad nothing too bad was damaged. I feel sorry for those who had pets outside, or cars!

Holy crap - those are huge! Aren't you suppose to have hot & sunny summer weather already? At least you didn't have major problems in your roof.

Nature at it's best. Best to have good head cover while that comes down.

Oh my goodness! I thought it's summer time there in Sydney. Lucky that you were indoor while it happened.

Wow! Aren't you in Sydney? Didn't know you had these things in the middle of summer. On the other hand, who knows these days. You better wear a hard hat.

Oh my goodness, that's crazy.
Or maybe I'm just spoiled by the weather here on the west coast.

likewise: I've only ever seen hailstones as big as grapes.

Oh my, this happened to us last year, I live in Minnesota, USA. (Photos here - http://www.twosheep.com/blog/?p=456)

Glad that you were not hurt. That kind of storm is scary as hell. Can you imagine driving and having all the car windows blown out simultaneously? (That happened to someone in our storm.)

i have to say i miss those storms, as ferocious as they are. i grew up in sydney, and now i live in hobart (tasmania). we just don't get storms like that. we've had some thunder and lightning this week -- i cant stres how rare that is -- or how excited i was!

Wow, what a crazy storm! Glad everyone is A-OK. The first photo posted is really quite beautiful though - the hail stone has such a wonderful shape to it.
